(The St George examples I've seen all have a vertical notch bisecting the top of the bishop. The diagonal notch seems to have been a Staunton invention.) Colored black like the chess piece, it draws inspiration from the religious bishop with long, flowing robes and a Christian cross on its breechcloth, as well as it staff akin to a bishop's crosier.
