I am with you, the 3D style of the DS remakes just didn't hit the spot with me. As far as which games to play. FFI + II Dawn of Souls. I is fun (although I am very nostalgic about that one). WebFF4 is my favorite and I was hoping some of the challenge from the 3D remake would transfer over to this version but it may be the easiest to date. You're right that leveling is too fast, this was made evident after transforming into Paladin and the first battle got my Cecil all the way up to level 9 instead of the usual 5 or 6.
